In Hinduism the Swastik is the most important symbol which we make on our every auspicious occasion. We make it on our entrance and at the place of puja during the grih pravesh or the satyanarayan katha and many more. The Swastik is a symbol of harmony, peace and opulence. Any Hindu ritual does not happen without marking the Swastik. The Swastik comes from the Sanskrit word Svasti (sv=well, asti=is) which means good fortune. It is not only used in India, it can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, the Romans and the Persians also.
Why this sign came into use and when ? To know the answer of this question we may have to go back. It is believed that there was an explosion and scattering of comets and meteors in the solar system. As a result, the Sun identified differently and energy of the Sun was in all directions in the shape of Swastik. Due to this reason the Swastik is believed to be a symbol of the Sun or the Surya Deva and it marked at the center because of sun the life existed on earth. The different four lines of the Swastik symbolizes the four directions North, South, East and West. In the Hinduism, there are also four Vedas known as the Rigveda, the Samaveda, the Yajurveda and the Atharvaveda which are related to the four directions of North, South, East and West. For the Hindus there are four purusharthas described Dharma, Arth, Kama and Moksha.
We may describe the symbol of Swastik as below:
The Symbol of the Sun: The Swastik may be associated with the Sun because multi directional sign of the swastik symbolizes the four directions of North, South, East or West. The Sun’s rays also fall in the four directions. As we here mentioned earlier that the energy of the Sun is in all directions in the shape of swastik.
Associated with the Lord Vishnu: It is believed that there are around 108 symbols which are associated with the Lord Vishnu and the Swastika is one of them. The Swastik can be seen on the right palm of the Vishnu.
The symbol of the Brahma: If you see the symbol of Swastik from above, you notice that it is pointing in all directions. This overlap the all seeing faces of Brahma so it can be associated with the Brahma.
Swastika as a symbol of preservation: As we here mentioned above, the Swastik is related to the Lord Vishnu. In Hinduism it is believed that the Lord Vishnu protects our life so as the Swastik save us from bad things. We put the swastik mark on our doors to keep away evil spirits.
The Swastik is very important in Hinduism, the Hindus hardly perform any ritual or puja without marking of Swastik door or other materials related to puja. In the Hindu religion, the sign of Swastika is known to everyone because it is one of the symbols of Hinduism. We must taught children about importance of the Swastika.
