लम्बोदरश्च विकटो विघ्ननाशो विनायक।।

धूम्रकेतुर्गणाध्यक्षो भालचन्द्रो गजानन:।

द्वादशैतानि नामानि य: पठेत् श्रुणुयादपि।।

विधारम्भे विवाहे च प्रवेशेनिर्गमे तथा।

संग्रामे संकट चैव विघ्नस्तस्य न जायते।।

  1. Sumukh – Having beautiful face

Ganesha is known as Sumukh – possessor of a beautiful face. This may come as a revelation to some of you, but it is a fact based on the core definition of beauty. Whenever Lord Ganesh is worshipped at the beginning of any auspicious occasion, his sacred and beautiful face is always the center of our attention.
His small eyes signify the seriousness. Long nose suggests his wisdom and intellect, where as his long flat ears suggest his knowledge prower of extreme nature. He listens to the events which are significant, so also carefully listens to the complaints and grievances of his devotees. Deergha Karna (Long ears) means this. He pronounces the integrated nature of Omkar…… i.e. Bramha Vishnu and Mahesh. All these dimensions together justify his name as Sumukh.

  1. Ekdant- Preacher (Acharya) of the community formed under the shelter of god

There is a story behind this name, once Goddess Parvati went for a bath and asked young Ganesha to guard the entrance of the bath. Suddenly Parshuram appeared from nowhere and tried to go in, Ganesha refused to let him in and great Parshuram, who was not used to being ordered around by a kid, took offence. Thus started a war of words between the two. The harshness and utter disdain in young Ganesha’s address proved too much for Parshuram and he lost his cool. He attacked Ganesha. The blow didn’t kill Ganesha but he lost one of his two teeth. From then on Ganesha came to be known as Ekdant. It is believed that before this incident Ganesha was vengeful, but after this he will be an epitome of patience and good intentions.

  1. Kapil – Deity from whom there is a proliferation of blue-and-yellow tint.

Lord Ganesh is also called Kapil, which means brown. Just as kapila, a brown cow, gives white milk and milk products that are essential for human physical and mental health, Ganesha, despite his dark complexion, is responsible for the mental and physical well-being of human being. Also, Ganesha’s blessings makes you immune from all ills and evils.

  1. Gajkarnak- Elephant eared.

Ganesha is the Lord of the mind. The huge ears depicted in his idols signify massive brain size.Gajkarnak means God with ears of elephant. He listens to everyone. The people with high degree of intellect and wisdom can only do great things; those with cheap hearing character always listen to trifle matters which do not achieve any benefits for mankind. This Ganesh Deity with long ears, as if, teaches the humanity to not to be a listener of cheap things, The ill wishers around may utter many good or bad words about us, listen to then but do not pronounce; not even once.

  1. Lambodar- whose stomach fits the whole universe inside and holds all knowledge and science.

Lambodar  means he who possesses a large torso. Besides its anatomical significance, the name also signifies that the deity has the ability to stomach anything, however good or bad. Also, he has seamless ability to learn. He is said to have learned all the Vedas by merely listening to the sound of Lord Shiva’s damru, a small hourglass shaped drum. He learned about music by listening to the sound of Goddess Parvati’s ghungaroo while she danced. He studied vedas from the sound of Damaru of Lord Shiva Thus, with the accumulation and storage of vast knowledge, his tummy became large.

  1. Vikat- Best among all, great warrior.

This is Ganesha’s Sixth name. It means ferocious, dreadful. Ganesh has all his body of a human being, but his face is of elephant. To realize the truth behind this name “Vikat” lord Ganesh stands firmly to defeat all the evils in the way. It is always said that one has to raise encounters in the same manner, as the opponents behave. The name given thus, gives inspiration to common man.

  1. Vignanash- The one who ends all problems

Lord Ganesh is known as Vighnanashak, which means the destroyer of trouble. So it is believed that you worship him before starting anything new.

  1. Vinayak- Unambiguous hero. Excellent guide.

This is Lord Ganesh’s Eighth name meaning thereby specific Nayak or Hero or leader. There will be no obstruction or stoppage in the work undertaken, when Lord Ganesh is satisfied with prayer and worshipped

  1. Dhumrketu-. He whose flag id ash-coloured

Means Agni, a flag like a smoke. It carries two meanings. Smoke of Decision – suspicion, a smoke, which would give concrete shape to the ideas and fluttering in the atmosphere like a flag. Therefore Ganesh is known as Dhoomraketu and is appreciated. Second meaning : Like Agni, Shri Ganesh destroys all the evils and calamities, which come in the way of the philosophical and scientific progress of mankind and enables it to achieve the highest success by providing strength.

  1. Ganadhyaksh- Master of counting,knowledged, Acharya of speed,pathfinder for attaining Nirvana.

This is Shri Ganesha’s Tenth name. It also carries two meanings. A swami or a controller of such things, which can be counted. Second meaning is swami or a controller of Ganas. (General People) Nar (Men), Asur (Demon) Nag (Snakes) Chaturveda (four vedas) four Purusharthas…….Ganesha is the swami of all these.

  1. Bhalchandra- one who carries moon on his forehead.

Lord Ganesh is known as Bhalchandra because he carries the moon, or a moon like symbol on his head. It is believed that Lord Ganesha placed the moon on his forehead. The soothing vibes emanating from the moon has a calming effect on the beings. It is also interpreted that ability to achieve in a person is directly proportional is how calm his/her mind is. So by keeping the moon on his forehead, Ganesha is telling others the importance of keeping a calm and stable head.

  1. Gajanan- speedy, born of knowledge,creator protector and destroyer too.

This is the Twelth and last name. It names a God having the face of elephant. Half at his body is of a human being while face is like elephant. Small eyes like elephant conveys the meaning of critical eyesight, also suggesting that one should have generous outlook. It further signifies lord Ganesha’s determination to protect the dignify and status of mankind forever. Long ears suggest that he is capable of listening everything. An elephant’s tongue is unique as it doesn’t come out of the mouth. Also, all beings are known by their speech. This is particularly true about human beings. Good use of tongue elevates a man, and misuse of it leads to his downfall. But since Ganesha’s tongue doesn’t come out, it can’t be misused. Similarly, Ganesha’s nose, ears and eyes are auspicious as well. . From the throat to his head, portion of Ganesha is like elphant, therefore is more prominent and attractive.

Secret of the name’Ganesha or Ganapati or Gajanan

Gajann – ‘Gankar’ meaning  exit (rhythm) and ‘Jakar “meaning origin (Genesis) reveals secrets. These two characters are famous in Vedas in the name of Gaja . creation, nourishment,  flow, are the prospective indicatives of lord Ganesha .

Ekdant-“Ek” stands for heavenly built god Brahma while “dant” indicates his enormous power .

Chaturbhuj – Ganapati  is the ruler of principal of water. Water has four attributes -word, touch, form and taste.Nature is of four types-the Swedaj, Andaj, Adwij, Jarayug.

Purusartha (Etymology) also called as object of human pursuit are of four types namely Dharma ( Righteousness, moral value) , Artha ( prosperity, economic values) , Kama ( pleasure love, psychological values) Moksha (liberation, spiritual values)

To attain Bhagwat (god salvation) received four different ways are defined in Gita,  make mind a divine, devotion to God,  worship God, and greet god.

मन्मना भव मद भक्तों मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु

Manmana bhav mad  bhakton  madyajee  maa  namaskuru

These four different ways indicates the four arms of ganesh.This way the four arms of lord Ganesh indicates, four directional nature,four directional etymology,four directional worshipper and four directional supreme devotion.

Vkratund-God’s Maya to make all beings into the delusion is insurmountable. Lord Ganesha destroyed that Maya with his snout so he is called ‘Vakra Tund’. Ganeshji’s  pattern is ‘curve’ that is Durjtrey. As he cures devotees’ pains and sorrows and prevent disruptions and gives salvation so he is called ‘Vakra Tund’

Surp Karn– As ‘surp’ purifies rice straw etc. for preparing food, so as Ganeshji picks up his votaries ignorance dust  and give knowledge to free them.  Maya is removed to achieve Brhmsacshatkar by oral hearing  and these Surps explains the mystery of subtlety of the auditory pathway.
